Essential Outdoor Gear: How to Choose a Headlamp

Headlamps are an essential item for nighttime activities, but they are also a necessity for day trips, trekking, and hiking. During the times of the year when daylight hours are shorter, there are situations where you may need to move in the dim light of early morning, or if your return is unexpectedly delayed, you can continue walking as long as you have a headlamp. We will explain the key points to consider when choosing a headlamp, an outdoor essential, including the definition of "brightness," light color, and water resistance.

Key points for choosing a headlamp

There are various types of headlamps, ranging from those for outdoor use to those for emergency preparedness. When considering use in outdoor activities, keep the following four points in mind.

Brightness

Distance the light reaches [beam distance]

The distance that light reaches is expressed as illumination distance, which refers to the distance at which an area can be illuminated at 0.25 lux (equivalent to the brightness of a full moon) or higher. However, in actual real-world conditions, the illumination distance may be shorter due to weather conditions such as fog or rain, terrain slope, and obstacles.

The value indicating brightness [Lumens]

Lumens are the output quantity of light (luminous flux). Lumens (lm) are commonly used as the unit to indicate brightness or the amount of light. However, a headlamp with a higher lumen value does not necessarily illuminate farther distances. When comparing two headlamps with the same lumen value, depending on how the light exits each headlamp (referred to as beam angle), light can be concentrated and allow it to illuminate farther. Conversely a light with a wide beam angle is convenient when you want to illuminate just the area directly in front of you. Montbell headlamps are equipped with two illumination modes: one that is easy to see far distances and one that is easy to see in front of you.
Consideration
When choosing a headlamp for mountain climbing, consider not only the lumen value but also the beam distance. A model with a beam distance of at least 30 meters is recommended, and for scenarios requiring nighttime activity, a model with 50 meters or more is better.

Can a smartphone light be used as a substitute?

In the case of smartphones, since you need to constantly hold them in one hand, it can be dangerous walking on mountain trails in the dark with your hands full. Additionally, in situations where you need to conserve battery power as a means of emergency communication, using the light function is not a very good method. With a headlamp, not only does it keep your hands free, but you can also properly illuminate in the direction you are looking. Since you can easily adjust the light intensity and direction, it is useful not only for emergencies but also in situations where you have no choice but to walk on roads at night.

Light color

White

Offers better vision by creating distinct shadows to recognize uneven surfaces, great for watching where to place your feet in the dark and recommended for hiking, trekking and related activities.

Warm light

Gentle on the eyes with a warm tone, making it easy to use for meals inside tents, as a handheld light, and in mountain huts where other hikers are present.

Red

Because read light causes less irritation to the eyes, using a paper map with red light is less likely to cause eye strain. It can shorten the time required for your eyes to adapt to the dark, making it recommended for astronomical observation, watching animals, and similar activities.
Consideration
Montbell headlamps, with the exception of some models, emit a warm white light when switched on. Because this light isn't bright, they are designed to prevent your eyes from being blinded the moment you turn them on. Additionally, in mountain huts and campsites, this shows consideration for other hikers.

Water resistance

Headlamps must also be waterproof so that they can operate without problems even when wet from rain or other moistures. The waterproof performance of headlamps is generally indicated by IP codes (IPXX). Waterproof performance is represented by the last digit, with protection levels ranging from 0 (no protection) to 8 levels.
Consideration
For outdoor use, IPX4 or higher (Protection Level 4: protected against water splashing from all directions with no harmful effects) is recommended, as it provides protection against raindrops and condensation.
IPX6 has a protection grade of 6 (not adversely affected by powerful water jets from any direction), and can be used with confidence in any weather conditions during mountain climbing.
  • Not completely waterproof.
  • Multi Power Headlamp series is IPX8, Compact Multi Lamp and BioLite headlamp series are IPX4.

Power supply

Headlamps have two power supply methods: dry battery type and rechargeable type that can be charged via USB.

Dry cell battery

Dry cells have the advantages of many relatively inexpensive models and the ease of finding replacements. Additionally, rechargeable batteries such as nickel-metal hydride batteries and lithium batteries can also be used, allowing you to reduce running costs. However, there is also the disadvantage that the light output gradually decreases as the battery power depletes.

Rechargeable battery

With a rechargeable battery that can be charged via USB, you can fully charge it at anytime, so you can use it without worrying about insufficient light output due to battery depletion or remaining battery level. Some models cannot be used while charging, so you need to be careful about the timing of charging.

Comparison image of brightness and illumination time

Unlike dry cell batteries, where the brightness gradually decreases along with the illumination time as the battery drains, rechargeable batteries maintain a constant brightness through two modes. When the battery level is sufficient, it operates in constant mode, maintaining a specified brightness. When the battery level decreases, the brightness decreases, and it enters reserve mode to maintain the minimum brightness sufficient for walking.

A hybrid model that can use both rechargeable batteries and dry cell batteries is also available in the lineup

We also offer a hybrid model that can use both a dedicated batteries and dry cell batteries. If you carry multiple spare dedicated batteries for the hybrid model, you can operate for extended periods at a consistent brightness level without needing to recharge.

Please note that the Rechargeable Power Battery (#1134205, sold separately) is only available for sale within Japan. If you are ordering from outside Japan, please use disposable batteries with these products.

Headlamp product lineup

Select by usage scenario

High-output models designed for nighttime activities

Recommended models for trips that include early morning or nighttime activities. For a main light suitable for hiking and trekking, a beam distance of 50m or more provides peace of mind.

Models suitable for stargazing and wildlife watching

Equipped with red LEDs, this model causes less stimulation to the eyes in the dark and is less likely to interfere with observation. The Power Headlamp is dry cell battery-powered, while the Multi Power Headlamp is a hybrid model.

      Choose by power supply method

Lightweight and compact models (dry cell battery and coin battery types)

A recommended model for camping and walks at night. It is also recommended as a backup light during hiking and trekking situations.

Easy-to-use rechargeable models that require no batteries

Rechargeable via USB, eliminating the need for battery replacement and allowing for repeated use. Can also be charged from a mobile battery.

Hybrid model that can use both rechargeable and dry cell batteries

Hybrid model that can use both rechargeable battery and dry cell batteries.
The Multi-Power Headlamp can only be used with the Rechargeable Power Battery (sold separately).
