Base Layers Selection Guide

''Autumn/Winter Base Layers': A collage image depicting outdoor activities. Photos of autumn mountain climbing and winter mountain climbing.

Choose high-performance base layers to enhance your outdoor activities.

Three Key Points for Autumn/Winter Base Layers

1. Retains heat

What is required for a base layer to be effective in outdoor activities is not just simple warmth, but long-lasting insulation that remains effective despite external temperature fluctuations caused by unpredictable weather changes or elevation differences.

2. Prevents rapid cooling

A bar graph comparing the thermal conductivity of water and air. Water conducts heat 25 times more easily than air, making it easier for body heat to be lost.
Even in cold conditions, active pursuits such as mountaineering or snow sports can cause heavy perspiration. When your base layer becomes soaked with perspiration and remains wet, it draws heat away from your body through evaporative cooling. During autumn and winter activities, it's vital to manage moisture and prevent rapid cooling to conserve your energy reserves.

The graph compares the thermal conductivity of water and air under controlled conditions. Higher values indicate greater heat transfer and an increased likelihood of heat loss from the body.

3. Fits closely to your body while maintaining mobility

By placing the seam in a diagonal (spiral) position, the cuff stretches effectively to provide a comfortable fit.

SUPER MERINO WOOL Base Layer Features

Manages moisture naturally and generates a degree of heat

Fibers have the property of generating heat when they absorb humidity, such as moisture from perspiration. Wool produces more heat than other fibers because it can hold a larger amount of moisture.

Keeps you feeling warm and free from chills when wet

The scales on the surface of wool fibers repel water, while the core readily absorbs moisture. This scale structure prevents your body from feeling cold even when you perspire. The absorbed moisture is slowly released and evaporates, keeping you warm and preventing rapid cooling.

The box construction, featuring two fabric layers connected by partitions. This design captures warm air to insulate your body. The outer layer features heat generating Super Merino Wool, while the inner layer combines SUPER MERINO WOOL with moisture-wicking polyester. This dual-layer construction provides both excellent heat retention and quick-drying properties.

Heat-retaining "multi-crimp wool"

Illustration introducing "Multi-crimp Wool" that generates warmth. Explanation follows.
SUPER MERINO WOOL utilizes "multi-crimp wool" with a fineness of 18.5 microns, which is produced in very small quantities. The fibers are highly crimped, creating numerous small pockets of air when knitted into fabrics. This trapped air, known as 'dead air,' serves as an effective insulator, providing excellent warmth. Crimped fibers also offer exceptional stretch, ensuring a comfortable fit without any tightness.

Resistant to odor and dirt

Magnified illustration of wool fibers. Explanation follows.
Wool offers excellent odor control properties by adsorbing odor sources such as ammonia and acetic acid gases, along with moisture, within its scale-like surface structure. Additionally, these scales repel water, enhancing the material's resistance to dirt.
Based on our in-house test data.

Comfortable and soft to the touch

SUPER MERINO WOOL is composed of fibers that are approximately 15% longer than those of regular merino wool, feeling softer and less prickly.

Quickly wicks away perspiration and prevents rapid cooling

Illustration introducing the function that quickly absorbs perspiration from the skin to the fabric and rapidly disperses it over a wide area, preventing perspiration-induced cooling. Explanation follows.
We apply a special hydrophilic treatment to the surface of the polyester fibers, which helps quickly wick moisture away from the skin. The core of the polyester fibers is hydrophobic and does not retain water, allowing the fabric to dry faster and helping to prevent rapid cooling. Furthermore, the fine gaps between the fibers act as capillaries, actively drawing perspiration away from the skin and rapidly diffusing it over a wide area to keep you dry and comfortable.

The silver ions work to suppress odors

An illustrative image depicting bacterial growth after Perspirationing. After 18 hours, bacteria are reduced due to antibacterial treatment.
The fibers receive a silver ion treatment, which actively reduces odor-causing bacteria over time. This is much more effective than ordinary antibacterial treatments that merely slow bacterial growth. Additionally, this silver ion treatment is long-lasting, even after repeated washing.

Gently wraps your body and offers a natural fit

Our base layers fit naturally, allowing for easy movement. Wearing them snugly against your skin without gaps maximizes the fabric's quick-drying and warmth retaining properties.

Gentle Comfort in 100% Natural Silk

Silk is a natural material made from cocoons spun by silkworms, which feed on mulberry leaves and produce them to protect themselves. Because silk is made of the same protein found in human skin, it is gentle on the skin and retains moisture well. It is also known for its exceptionally smooth, luxurious feel, often described as a "silky touch."
An illustration showing silk fabric quickly absorbing sweat.

Comfortable to Wear All Year Round

Silk has excellent moisture absorption and release properties. It quickly absorbs perspiration and maintains a consistently dry, refreshing feel. Although the fabric is lightweight, it can trap a large amount of air between its fibers, providing comfortable wear even during cooler seasons.

Less Prone to Static Electricity

Because silk readily absorbs moisture, it is less likely to generate static electricity, even when worn in layers. Nylon is blended in to reinforce the fabric, helping it retain its shape and making it suitable for home washing.

Base Layer Q&A

Q. How do heat generating materials produce heat?

A. Many materials can absorb moisture vapor from perspiration and convert it into heat energy.

Perspiration produced by the body evaporates into water vapor, which has high kinetic energy. When water vapor comes into contact with the fiber, it releases energy in the form of heat. There are many materials that release generate heat in this way, and wool exhibits higher heat generation compared to many other fibers.

Q. Why is wearing cotton not recommended for outdoor activities?

A. Because cotton is difficult to dry once wet, and it can cause rapid cooling.

Cotton feels soft against the skin but takes longer to dry when wet, potentially causing rapid cooling through evaporation. This makes it unsuitable for sweat-inducing activities or weather-dependent outdoor pursuits. For everyday use, travel, and mild hiking, we recommend Core Spun, a cotton-polyester blend that combines cotton's comfort with polyester's quick-drying properties.

Q. Will wool base layers shrink if washed at home?

A. Always check the washing labels. Montbell's Super Merino Wool base layers are machine washable!

Montbell's SUPER MERINO WOOL is treated to be washable, so you can safely launder it at home. However, typical wool tends to shrink when it gets wet. When exposed to moisture, the scales on wool fibers open up, causing them to entangle with one another. This entanglement makes it difficult for the fibers to return to their original state upon drying, resulting in shrinkage and stiffness. Some wool garments cannot be washed at home, so it's important to check the care instructions before washing.
