Checkpoints

Photos of back and inside of backpack
We will introduce points where damage from use or age-related deterioration is likely to appear. If you discover any abnormalities, please consult your nearest Montbell store or Montbell Customer Service.

Zipper

Please check if sand or other foreign objects are clogging the zipper, making it difficult to move or damaging the teeth. Perspiration or moisture can also cause the slider to rust. Additionally, be cautious not to overstuff the top lid. Overfilling puts excessive stress on the zipper when opening and closing, which can lead to damage.

Attachment points of shoulder harness to main body

The point where the shoulder harness is sewn to the main body is constantly under stress due to the load. Please check for any abnormalities such as thread breakage along the seams.

Back pad

Check for odors or staining. The back pad absorbs a large amount of perspiration, so it will accumulate dirt if not 'washed'. If left dirty, the urethane foam becomes more prone to deterioration, and as it progresses, it can crumble and fall apart.

The part where the end of the frame touches the ground

For models with frames to increase stability, check the fabric around the frame ends for tearing.

Buckles

Check if buckles clip securely and release smoothly. As deterioration progresses, the buckle's fastening strength decreases. Also, check for damage to the buckles, such as if they've been stepped on or caught in a door. Some replacement buckles are available on our online store and Montbell stores, so buckles that are not sewn on can be replaced by customers themselves.

Main compartment fabric (internal)

Checking for peeling or stickiness of the coating on the inside fabric of the backpack? Continued use is not recommended as the deterioration of the coating reduces the strength and water resistance of the fabric. Re-coating the fabric is not possible, so please consider this as a guideline for when to replace the item.

Cords

Check if the surface of the cords are worn. If the surface coating wears off and the inner core is exposed, it will interfere with use.

Fabric surface

Check for mud or other staining. If stains remain on the fabric during long-term storage, it can accelerate the deterioration of the material.

How to wash and store your backpack

The lifespan of a product due to the aging and deterioration of the fabric coating is typically around 4-5 years. However, if the coating is kept in good condition through proper maintenance, it may be possible to use the product for a longer period.
Before washing, check for fabric deterioration or peeling of the coasting, as washing may cause further damage.

1. Preparation

Remove any detachable parts before washing (such as frames, rain covers, shoulder harness and waist belt adapters), and open all zippers.

2. Spot cleaning

If there are noticeable stains, wet the area with water and apply a neutral detergent such as O.D. Maintenance Multi Cleaner, then scrub with a sponge or brush.

3. Hand wash by gently pressing

Fill a wash basin or bathtub with enough water to just submerge the backpack, and add a neutral detergent. Immerse the entire backpack and gently hand wash (press down on the backpack). For heavy soiling, using lukewarm water can be more effective.

4. Rinse

After hand washing, rinse the backpack. Tilt the wash basin or drain the bathtub to remove the dirty water, then submerge the backpack in clean water and hand wash again by pressing down on the backpack. Repeat this rinsing process in the same manner until the water runs clear.

5. Remove excess water

Turn the backpack upside down and drain excess water. Since the back pad easily retains water, either absorb it with a towel or squeeze out the water by hand by pressing down on the backpack.

6. Drying

Dry in the shade. Ultraviolet rays can damage the fabric, so avoid direct sunlight and dry it in a well-ventilated area. Moisture tends to remain in the gaps of fabric where urethane foam or frames are inserted, so make sure to dry it thoroughly.

7. Storage

Avoid storing in places exposed to direct sunlight, inside vehicles, outdoor sheds/garage, or other areas with high temperatures and humidity. Instead, store in a well-ventilated, shaded area.
